Evil Kitty collection at the prestigious 900 SHOPS

The opening of the LAUNCH SHOP at The 900 Shops was a success. Guests paid $25 to meet the new designers accepted by the Chicago Fashion Incubator, to support the program, as well as to shop for the latest styles from the CFI's alumni.

I arrived quite early and the place was already crowded. The new kids were exhibiting their creations in the "event room," drinks were flowing and everyone seemed to have a good time. It was nice to see so many familiar faces. After a chat with Meghan from Style Admirer, I made my way to the boutique. Of course, the dress that was put on the mannequin was the same dress I chose to wear that evening! I hope my "Lace Mini Dress" stuck in people's mind.

CFI's Launch Shop is located on the 5th floor of The 900 Shops, at 900 North Michigan Avenue. The hours are: Thur-Sat 10am-7pm, Sunday 12-6pm. Stop by and buy some new 2010 Evil Kitty dresses. The shop will only stay open for a month, till April 18th.

Designer Networking Event at The Chicago Creative Lounge

On Monday, February 8th the Mayors Fashion Council hosted a designer discussion and reception at the Creative Lounge Chicago. It was a fabulous success, being well attended and hosted by some of Chicago’s most successful creatives.

The morning began with an opportunity to mingle over muffins and hot coffee; while new connections were made between attendees from all aspects of the fashion industry. I met a range of people, from students in their senior year at one of the many local fashion institutes, to seasoned veterans of the fashion industry who were there to voice their concerns over the impact the economy has made on their local businesses.

The event was officially opened through an introduction by it’s hosts, including a foreward by Lee Allison and recognition of the designers who currently work out of the studio space at the Creative Lounge- including our very own Lidia Wachowska, the creative mastermind behind Evil Kitty.

After a little background about the space itself, each table of attendees became it’s own discussion group, headed by a member of The Chicago Fashion Council. The point of the discussion group was to be a forum in which to voice your questions and concerns, and a place to bounce feedback and suggestions off your fellow designers. Our table was headed by Lee Allison, and primarily consisted of this years group of incoming designers into the Macy’s Fashion Incubator. A few of the topics covered included the question of how to keep designers local, and the need to bring big businesses back to Chicago, such as Sears, who often employed many of the hundreds of new fashion graduates pouring out of our schools each year. The economic effect on local small businesses was a hot topic, of which it was continuously concluded that a sense of community and shared resources between designers would be the only thing that can keep Chicago moving towards it’s goal of having a real and sustainable presence as a fashion capitol.

As a move toward building a sense of community in the Chicago fashion scene, this was a fantastic step in the right direction. I saw people everywhere connecting with friends, exchanging business cards, and sharing advice on everything from where to find space to how to get in touch with local manufacturers. The event even extended beyond the borders of fashion to include local artists whose installations were not only the centerpiece of the space itself, but created a great topic of conversation for all the new connections happening around them.

Keep checking back with us, as there are many more great upcoming events that will be happening at The Chicago Creative Lounge. You can look forward to seeing some of Chicago’s hottest new labels premiere there collections here, as well as meet Lidia and some of Chicago’s hottest up and coming talent.

I have a crush on PJ Harvey

That's true. She is the best female artist out there in my opinion. Polly Jean is powerful, sexy, mysterious, very talented and unpredictable.
I saw her last night and she did not disappoint. I had mixed feelings before the concert. I just finished listening to her last record and wasn't that impressed. I'm still waiting for her to top "Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea," which was an excellent record. Even though the songs she picked weren't my favorites, she still managed to keep my attention through the entire show.

One of her amazing performances:

The Ting Tings - the acoustic set at The Abbey

Chicago is cold and miserable today, but it doesn't bother me. I had a really good day. I met Katie and Jules from The Ting Tings. They played an acoustic set at The Abbey Pub in Chicago, before their regular show at Metro.

The show was sponsored and recorded by WXRT radio. It was part of their "Live from Studio X" series. Marty Lennartz; one of XRT's DJs, interviewed The Ting Tings on stage. He asked them questions before, during and after the set. Surprisingly this arrangement didn't seem disruptive. The whole show had a nice flow and it was fun to watch. Katie has an amazing voice. I didn't always appreciate it while listening to their record. It really came through during the acoustic set.

Things I didn't realize before I met them today...
1) Katie is much smaller in person
2) She has an amazing vocal range
3) She designs and styles her own stage outfits
4) Jules is a little bit envious of Katie being showered with designer outfits. He wouldn't mind a cool piece of garment once in a while.

I gave Katie some Evil Kitty outfits. My next project is to design a couple of stage outfits for her and for Jules. I felt a little bit guilty I didn't bring anything for him today.

Chicago Fashion Incubator....I will miss you!

Since my time at the Chicago Fashion Incubator is winding down, I would like to pay tribute to this exceptional program.

The Chicago Fashion Incubator is a non-profit organization supporting emerging Chicago designers. Each year they pick six promising designers to mentor. Two main sponsors of the program are Macy's on State Street and the City of Chicago.

Chicago Magazine said it best when they wrote:

"The Incubator is a collaborative effort between Macy's and the city, and Mayor Daley himself stopped by to share a very few words about his goals for the program: "to give [the designers] the help they need to succeed in fashion in Chicago—and to keep them here. If we're going to be really a global city, the fashion industry has to be part of that image."

Now that it's time to move out; I'm reflecting on the past year with the program. I'm very thankful for all the help and support I have received. I loved working at the Macy's on State Street, and will have the fondest memories of my time here. In addition to the mentoring received, Evil Kitty has also gotten a lot of press.
